CCBB receives unique exhibition of artist Jean Michel Basquiat
With over 80 works of art, including paintings, drawings, engravings and painted plates, this incredible collection of masterpieces by the artist Jean Michel Basquiat can be seen at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) in São Paulo. The works will be on display in São Paulo until April 7.
Brother’s Sausage | 1983 | Acrylic, oil paint sticks and paper collage on canvas | 122 x 476 cm
The Jean-Michel Basquiat retrospective was assembled with works belonging to the Mugrabi family, owners of one of the largest collections of Basquiat, as well as Andy Warhol. The works of art were solicited by several countries, among them South Korea, Japan and Russia. This incredible collection is on display in Brazil thanks to the joint efforts of Banco do Brasil and the production company Art Unlimited, with sponsorship from BB SEGURIDADE, BRASILCAP and GRUPO SEGURADOR BANCO DO BRASIL and MAPFRE GROUP. Pieter Tjabbes is the curator.
A SHORT BUT PRODUCTIVE LIFE
Basquiat was born in 1960 and died of an overdose at the young age of 27. His father was Haitian and his mother a descendant of Puerto Rican immigrants. From an early age, he was recognized as an exceptionally intelligent child. Influenced by his family (with whom he would later have conflicts and, in his late teens, even leave home and live on the streets for some days), he quickly learned French and Spanish, in addition to English, and was encouraged to develop his artistic talents.
When he was a child, he was run over while playing in the streets of Brooklyn. One of his arms was broken in the accident, and he had to have his spleen removed. An avid reader, his mother gave him a copy of Gray’s Anatomy, a nineteenth-century human anatomy textbook, to read during his long recovery period. This book would come to influence his art more than a decade later.
When he died in 1988, Basquiat was a star in the New York art scene. His work, characterized by the use of simple materials, such as plain paper, collages and photocopies, and the combination of human images (often inspired by the anatomy book given to him by his mother) and words, attracted the attention of critics, curators and, more importantly, buyers. Visiting the artist’s studio was an event enjoyed by gallery owners, who were able to encourage interest in the unique and new works by Basquiat.
Location: R. Álvares Penteado, 112 – Centro, São Paulo – SP, 01012-000

The “é tudo verdade” Festival
The “É Tudo Verdade” festival – an international documentary festival – opens on September 4 for film submissions to participate in the event in 2018. Founded and organized by film critic Amir Labaki, the 23rd edition of the festival will be held between April 12 and 22, 2018, occurring simultaneously in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Established or up-and-coming, these “reality” filmmakers offer audiences the art of their unique visions of the world in an exclusive event in the cinemas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with itineraries in two other capitals: Brasília and Porto Alegre. In addition to the screenings and debates, as always with free admission, it is possible to revisit contemporary landmarks on the Internet and explore new frontiers with the first Virtual Reality recordings of indigenous people in the Xingu region. Another important challenge, the creation of a young viewing public, is a new project involving students in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
When looking to the future, it is crucial to understand the past. This year’s international retrospective sheds light on a still unknown chapter in the history of documentary films, with an overview of Soviet production. In the centenary of the 1917 Russian revolution, a selection of rarely seen documentaries will be screened, as well as classics, such as “Man with a Movie Camera” (1929) and “The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty” (1927) from the Russian and Austrian archives.
Similarly, a Brazilian retrospective celebrates the work of Sérgio Muniz, one of the innovators in national filmmaking, even before his pivotal role in “Caravana Farkas”, and one of the main mediators of our relationship with modern Latin American production. It is opportune that, this year, there will be a specific prize for Latin American feature films.
